Sponsored by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and China Meteorological Administration (CMA), cosponsored by State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs and WMO East Asian Monsoon Activity Center/BCC, and hosted by the Beijing Climate Centre of CMA, The Twelfth Session of the Forum on Regional Climate Monitoring-Assessment-Prediction for Asia (RAII) was successfully convened during 7-9 April 2016 in Guangzhou, China. During the opening ceremony, Academician Wang Huijun, Chair of CMS, Mr. Yu Xinwen, Deputy Administrator of CMA, made address respectively.
Academician Wang highlighted the purpose of the meeting and the significance of the development initiative to jointly build the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road with an attempt to promote regional cooperation and strengthen connectivity. .
Mr Yu expressed CMA’s willing to further strengthen cooperation with domestic and foreign researchers, to pool the wisdom of all the scientists for better science and technology, and hence a better tropical and marine meteorological monitoring, forecasting and service, to benefit the regional economic and social development and the well-being of the people along the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road.
The Forum discussed the outputs from various climate prediction models (BCC/CMA, JMA and KMA) and used these outputs, to produce a most likely seasonal climate outlook (attached as Appendix I to this report) for the RA II region for summer (June-July-August) of 2016. The outlook was also partly based on the predictions by the participants from China, China Hong Kong, China Macao, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Laos, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam, for their own countries/regions with various statistical and dynamic methods.
In the summary session, many participants took the chance to comment on the Forum, highly appraised the exchange between climatologists and end-users, which greatly helped to improve climate services especially on seasonal forecast in Asian monsoon region. A “consensus” prediction of the summer climate in the RA II region was produced.
The IMH of Mongolia will host the 4th EASCOF(East ASia winter Climate Outlook Forum) which is formerly the Joint Meeting for the Seasonal Prediction of the East Asian Winter Monsoon in either late October or early November of 2016.
