Beijing Climate Center
Opportunities exist for scientists from research institutes and/or universities around the world to visit Beijing Climate Centre (BCC), China Meteorological Administration (CMA), China in order to undertake collaborative research for periods of up to three months. BCC also provides an ideal base for interaction with other scientists from CMA.
Research Themes
BCC visiting scholarship programme covers research topics of the 12 themes listed below. Applicants to the Visiting Scholarship Programme may propose a topic of study covering one or more of the research themes. It is desirable, though not compulsory, that draft proposals are discussed with relevant scientists from BCC before a formal application is made. 1. Development of multi-model ensemble system
2. Seasonal and interannual climate prediction
3. Asian monsoon dynamics
4. Impacts of drought/flooding on agriculture and water resource
5. Impacts of heat wave on human’s health
6. Building early warning and disaster prevention systems of drought, flood, typhoon, and heat wave, and put climate information and predictions into these systems
7. Climate variability, predictability and impact in Asia
8. Developing tools for objective climate analysis for Asia
9. Developing climate modeling system for Asia
10. Developing and validating regional models and methods of downscaling of global output products
11. Promoting studies of the economic value of climate information
12. Developing data quality management including quality control and homogenization of instrumental data and creation of gridded data
Criteria for selection
The number of visiting scientist positions is limited - successful applicants will propose innovative, specific and achievable research that will make a significant contribution to the missions and goals of BCC. Applicants are usually expected to have research degree in meteorology or physics and a record of a research experience and achievement in a relevant subject. Applications will be evaluated by a committee appointed by BCC.
Costs covered by the scholarship
The Visiting Scholarship includes a round trip air-fare, accommodation in Beijing and a subsistence allowance.
Application
Application should be send to bcc@cma.gov.cn including the following information:
- A proposal of around 1,000 words outlining the main features of the research to be pursued during the period at BCC.
- A short description of how a scholarship at BCC will benefit your project.
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae.
- The applicant may also include a letter of support, but this is not obligatory.
The successful applicant may be invited to take up his/her period of residence during either the autumn (September–November) 2005 or spring (March– May) 2006.
