The consultation meeting of spring sand/dust storm prediction in 2008 was held by BCC on 8 January. Dr. Xu Xiaofeng (Deputy Administrator of CMA) attended the meeting and delivered a speech. More than 30 experts from BCC, NMC/CMA, National Satellite Meteorological Center/CMA, CAMS/CMA, IAP/CAS, the State Forestry Administration and Beijing, Hebei, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Xinjiang provincial meteorological Bureau attended the meeting.
The main topics for the consultation meeting were the review of sand/dust storms in 2007 and outlook of spring sand/dust storm in 2008. On the meeting, experts summarized the survey, cause and impacts of sand/dust storms in northern China in 2007, and also discussed the trend of spring sand/dust storm in northern China of 2008.
Dr. Xu Xiaofeng (Deputy Administrator of CMA) stressed that we need to strengthen the research of mechanism and law of sand/dust storm, especially in the background of global warming. He said that the sand/dust storm is the main spring weather and climate events in China, it’s very important to strengthen the sand/dust storm prediction. He hoped that the consultation meeting would provide better services for decision-making at all levels of government. At the same time, he expressed gratitude to the State Forestry Administration for their support, and he hope that the two units will further cooperate in forest fire, sand/dust storm and other aspects in future.
