Dr. Dong Wenjie, Deputy Director General in charge of the National Climate Center, inspected the Climate System Modeling Division and he was briefed on the model development on August 3, 2004. He also held an informal discussion on the development of climate models.
After listening to the working reports made by various research groups of the Climate System Modeling Division, Dr. Dong expressed his understanding of the hard work and highly appreciated the remarkable progress despite the difficulties in developing the models. He fully recognized the progress achieved by the Division as well as its positive role in developing China’s climate models. He also conveyed the expectations of Mr. Zhang Guocai, Director-General of the Department of Forecasting Services and Disaster Mitigation. Dr. Dong believed that there were many talented scientists and they had the capability as well as responsibility in developing China’ own climate models. He also encouraged them to bring their knowledge into full play and do a solid job in model development to live up to the expectations from the leaders of the China Meteorological Administration at different levels.
Finally, Dr. Dong requested that the Climate System Modeling Division should pay more attention to summarize their experience and to report its research progress in a timely manner. He also requested that cooperation and exchanges with their counterparts both in China and abroad should be strengthened for common interests.
