In Bangladesh, monsoonal rains are causing havoc especially in parts of the capital Dhaka. Meanwhile, in neighboring India, severe flooding has left 127 people dead and tens of thousands homeless in the western state of Gujarat.
For Dhaka’s 10 million residents, this is a familiar sight in monsoon season. The floods clogged traffic in morning rush hour. And many shop owners had to start the day by bailing out water from those flooded stores. The rainy season lasts from July to September. If last year is anything to go by, the next few months could leave hundreds dead and millions homeless across Bangladesh.
Meanwhile in India, a let-up in the weather has allowed the military to resume dropping food and medicines to those marooned in Gujarat. Gujarat is one of the richest states in India. Businessmen said industrial production in many areas had come to a halt due to the widespread flooding. State officials estimate losses have already reached about 460 million US dollars.
