On April 8, Beijing Climate Centre (BCC) successfully organized a meeting with end-users before the closing ceremony of The Second Session of the Forum on Regional Climate Monitoring, Assessment and Prediction for Asia (FOCRAⅡ) in the Science and Technology Building of China Meteorology Administration (CMA), Beijing. Some 20 end-users from various enterprises, organizations and government agencies concerned with climatic and meteorologic conditions attended the meeting. The meeting was co-presided by Prof. Chen Deliang, Scientific Director of BCC and Prof. Dong Wenjie, Director of BCC. Prof. Xu Xiaofeng, Deputy Administrator of CMA attended the meeting and answered some of the questions raised by the users.
Dr. Sun Leng, Deputy Director of Research and Operation Management Division, BCC gave a brief introduction entitled “BCC and its products from a user perspective”. She described all the products of BCC into various types according to climate variables, time scales, style, etc. Then the users were encouraged to make comments and give feedbacks to BCC. To help the interactions, a questionnaire was prepared by BCC and delivered to the users together with the invitation to attend the meeting. The purpose was to collect suggestions from the end-users on their needs, interests and the way to obtain the climate products. The discussion points with the users were based on the following questions to the users.
What climate variables or combination of climate variables are most interesting to you?
Are you interested in past climate? If yes, what is the relevant time frame for you? (past month, season, year, decade.....)
Are you interested in climate prediction? If yes, what is the relevant time horizon for you? (next month, season, year, decade......)
If you do not know exactly what climate information you need, are you interested in developing the understanding and knowledge with BCC?
In which you want to have the climate information you need from BCC? (Newspaper, web site, TV, Radio, Fax, message to cell phone.......)
Do you have other special wishes?
Because all the participants of FOCRAⅡtook part in the discussion and some of them can not speak Chinese, the discussion was carried out both in Chinese and English. Some end-users gave their positive comments to their contacts with BCC, expressed their concerns and wishes, and raised questions to the BCC/CMA leaderships. One of the users represented all the end-users gave a speech on the following closing ceremony of FOCRAⅡby thanking BCC for providing such an opportunity to enable communications between producers of the climate products and the end-users. In addition, he hopes that such meetings would be continued in the future to strengthen the collaboration between the users and the providers of climate information.
