From 16 to 17 August 2006, there was light to moderate rain in west and northeast of Sichuan Basin, north and southeast of Chongqing; heavy to torrential rain in partial area, especially 78.8mm precipitation within 24 hours in Ya’an. Hence, the drought was alleviated to some degree in partial areas. In Sichuan, the drought in 21 counties was alleviated on 15 and 16 August, mainly in Chengdu and Mianyang.
Influenced by the rainfall, the heat wave turned weak in Chongqing and Sichuan, where the highest temperature on 16 August dropped obviously than that on 15 August. The highest temperature was currently below 40℃ but still maintained 37℃ or above.
According to the prediction by the Central Meteorological Observatory, the heat and drought will continue in the above areas.
