The 10th WMO Symposium on Education and Training (SYMET) was held in Nanjing

On 18 Sep, 2006, the 10th WMO Symposium on Education and Training (SYMET) was opened in Nanjing University of information Science and Technology (former named Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, also designated by WMO as East-Asian Regional Training Center), Jiangsu Province. Mr. Liang Baohua, the governor of Jiangsu Province, Dr. Qin Dahe, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Mr. Michel Jarraud, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) addressed in the opening ceremony. WMO SYMET is held every 4 years. During this meeting, around 110 meteorological officers and scientists from more than 80 countries will discuss and communicate on the topic “Education and Training on prevention and mitigation of Meteorological and Hydrological disasters”.

Qin Dahe pointed out that, services for prevention and mitigation of meteorological disasters are the most important obligations of meteorological departments, China pay much attention on education and training on disaster prevention and mitigation. The three strategies of China meteorology development, ——“Public”, “Security” and “Resource”, are the solid basis of the better services of disaster prevention and mitigation. Effective early warning on natural disasters is most important in socio- economic development, state security and sustainable development. Moreover, high quality services on climate prediction and early warning mostly rely on high-capacity hydro-meteorological working team. In order to realize this, CMA is now accordingly carrying one training program and the international cooperation on hydro-meteorological education and training is also one of the CMA’s main tasks. This symposium held in Nanjing University of information Science and Technology clearly indicated our acceptance of WMO education and training program and disaster prevention and mitigation projects.

Mr. Michel Jarraud explained the general target of this meeting.

As one of the hosts of SYMET, Nanjing University of information Science and Technology have carried meteorological education and training for nearly 50 years, which achieved a lot in international communication, jointly running a school and international meteorological education and training. Among this, as the WMO Regional Training center, it is well known as one of the five most active training centers.
