Tenth session of IPCC Working Group 1 was held in Paris, France on January 29. The four-day meeting will consider and approve the Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC Working Group 1, and principle pass the main report of Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC Working Group 1.
According to IPCC working principle, experts had conducted the first round of accreditation, the second round of government / expert assessment, and the final round of government assessment for policy makers. After the meeting, the Assessment Report of IPCC Working Group 1 will be officially published in the first quarter of this year.
China Meteorological Administration is the overall coordination of IPCC relevant work in China; it organized relevant experts to conduct a careful assessment, and has held cross-sectoral experts and officials seminars to discuss key issues, collating and selecting on the assessment views, and based on the above steps, we submitted our government views. Academician Qin Dahe (Administrator of CMA, Co-Chairman of IPCC Working Group 1) led the Chinese delegation to participate in the meeting. The delegation including experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water Resources, China Environment Protection Administration, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and China Meteorological Administration.
Academician Qin Dahe presided the opening ceremony, Dr. Christian Brodhag (representative of Sustainable Development of French), Dr. Patricio Bernal (Assistant Director of UNESCO), Dr. Jeremiah Lengoasa (Assistant Secretary-General of WMO), Dr. Alex Alusa (representative of UNEP), Dr. Rajendra Pachauri (Chairman of IPCC) and Dr. Susan Solomon (Co-Chairman of IPCC Working Group 1) delivered speeches on the meeting. More than 300 government representatives from around the world, the main author of the Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC Working Group 1, and some members of IPCC attended the meeting.
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established IPCC in 1988. Its major tasks are to assessment scientific understanding of climate change, climate change impact and adaptation, and possible responses to mitigate climate change. IPCC have completed three-assessment reports in 1990, 1995 and 2001, and these reports have become the scientific basis for international community's awareness and understanding of climate change issues. Currently, the preparation of IPCC Fourth Assessment Report has entered the final stage. The assessment report of the three working groups will be completed and published in the first, second and third quarters of this year. Since the founding of IPCC, our country actively participates its activities. At present, there are 29 Chinese experts as the main author of the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report convener, author and pipeline. Ten of them participated in the assessment report of Working Group 1 as its author.
