Recently, the 2006 Science and Technology Progress Award of Colleges and Universities from the Ministry of Education PRC were announced. “Energy and Water Cycle Meteorological and Hydrological Prediction Project of the Huaihe River Basin" won the first prize of 2006 Science and Technology Progress Award.
“Energy and Water Cycle Meteorological and Hydrological Prediction Project of the Huaihe River Basin" (the Huaihe River Basin Energy and Water Cycle Experiment and Research, HUBEX) was supported by a grant from the Major Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China 9th Five-Year Plan Period, and was the observation experiment in Asian Monsoon Region of Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX), also a Sino-Japanese cooperation project. The project aims to carry out meteorological and hydrological observation to further understand the energy and water cycle process of the East Asian Monsoon precipitation mesoscale systems and its interaction with the land surface process. Through setting up and improving regional climate-hydrology coupling model to improve weather and climate prediction, precipitation forecast accuracy, so as to reduce and prevent the climate disaster impact on social and economic development.
The project was begun in 1992, formally implemented in 1997, and through acceptance and identification in 2003. It has obtained fruitful research and application results. 40 experts from professional departments and universities had made important contribution for the project.
The main person that won the award were Prof. Zhao Bolin (Peking University/ Project leaders), Prof. Ding Yihui (BCC), Prof. Zhang Wenjian (CMA), Prof. Li Wanbiao (Peking University), Prof. Xu Hui (Huaihe River Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of the Water Resources), Prof. Zai Wuquan (Anhui Provincial Meteorological Bureau), Prof. Zhu Yuanjing (Peking University), Prof. Lin Zhaohui (the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Ge Wenzhong (Nanjing University), Prof. Zhang Yan(BCC), and Prof. Hao Zhenchun (Hohai University).
The main units of the project are Peking University (charge unit of the project), BCC/CMA (in charge of the observation experiments and database construction), the Huaihe River Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing University, Hohai University, and Anhui Provincial Meteorological Bureau.
