July 30, Dr. Hu Qi from Nebraska-Lincoln University visited the Laboratory for Climate Studies/CMA and made a speech named ‘The North American Summer Monsoons’. More than 20 participants from BCC (Beijing Climate Centre) and CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) attended the meeting.
In his report, Dr. Hu Qi mainly talked about the advance research progress of the North American Summer Monsoon. First, he briefly summarized the origin and development of the North American summer monsoon research; then focus on the North American summer monsoon climate characteristics and its impacts on precipitation in other areas from the following three aspects: the seasonal changes of divergence circulation, the lower wind overturn in cold/warm season, and precipitation variability. His research showed that: 1) At a certain extent, the North American monsoon in northern Mexico is the most active and strength; the southwestern USA is the monsoon influenced area, which has made the summer precipitation forecasting more difficult; 2) A number of forced process influenced the North American monsoon, these processes influenced the monsoon variability at interannual time scale alternately, which has increased the difficulty of monsoon forecasting.
While listening to his report, participants had a warm discussion contacted on the East Asian Monsoon. Prof. Ren Guoyu presided the meeting.
