Presided by NMC, the Annual Workshop of the Key Project of MOST, Research on Meteorological Service Technology for Olympic Games, was held on 14-15 December 2003. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Zhang Guocai, director-general of NMC and Mr. Xie Pu, director-general of BMMB. Approximately 50 leaders and experts from DSTD, DFSDM, NMC, BMMB and Qingdao Meteorological Bureau participated in the workshop. In the workshop, the research progress in the past year was summarized, and problems in the research and working plan of 2004 were discussed.
The main progresses accomplished in 2003 include: 1) The main body framework of refined atmospheric NWP model and basic platform of data analysis were established. 2) The upgrade and amelioration of simulation tools (refined microclimate model and city micro-scale simulator) were initially completed. 3)The variation assimilation method for radar data was developed and initially experimented. 4)The Poor-Man multi-model results assembling method was initially established. 5)The format conversion of land surface observational data, AMS data and upper air data was completed; the installment and debugging of LAPS system as well as the connection with the data were finished. The framework of nowcasting system for the Olympic Games were determined. 6) The short-term forecast method for disastrous weather during the Olympic Games was studied. 7) The FDP report on the preparation study of WWRP demonstration project and the implementation plan of platform building were finished. 8)The data set of all kinds of game items in the important national and international games in the recent ten years was established; the research on the relationship between athletic sports and meteorological condition as well as forecast method and impact of environmental and meteorological condition on human was carried out.
Totally 82 experts took part in the project, 47 of them holding the title of high technical post.
