The consultation meeting of midsummer climate prediction in 2008 was held by BCC on 26 June. Experts from all the Municipal and Provincial Meteorological Bureaus joined the videophone meeting. The meeting mainly focused on the evolution characteristics of the ocean and atmosphere circulation, weather and climate since spring; and further discussed the main rain belt location and trends distribution of droughts and floods (particularly in North China, the Huang-Huai-Hai area, the Jianghuai area) of China in July and midsummer (July-August); the evolution trends of the middle and high latitudes blocking high and the West Pacific subtropical high; climate prediction of Beijing and Qingdao during the Olympic Games; climate prediction and services of post-earthquake reconstruction area. Dr. Xu Xiaofeng, Deputy Administrator of CMA, attended the meeting and made a speech. Dr. Zhai Panmao, Deputy Director-General of Department of Forecasting Services and Disaster Mitigation, Dr. Xiao Ziniu and Dr. Li Weijing, Deputy Director-General of BCC, Academician Tao Shiyan and Ding Yihui, and Prof. Wang Shaowu attended the meeting.
Dr. Xu Xiaofeng said this year China suffered multiple natural disasters and was seriously damaged. BCC’s prediction of the past climate was basically consistent with the observation. However, since the short-term climate prediction is still a worldwide problem, we should fully realize the importance and hardship of our services in flood season this year and constantly strengthen our monitoring and prediction. He hoped that the experts would carefully analyze and fully discuss to accurately hold the climate trend of midsummer 2008, to do good jobs in flood season, for the Olympic Games and for the post-earthquake reconstruction areas.
