Sponsored by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and co-sponsored by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the National Natural Science Foundation of China，Global Change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training (START), Lanzhou University and Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau, the Fifth International Seminar on Climate System and Climate Change was successfully held from 14-25 July 2008 in Lanzhou, China.
Over 100 Chinese participants (including Hong Kong and Macao) and 2 foreign participants from Myanmar and Malaysia attended the ISCS. During the opening ceremony, Dr. Zheng Guoguang, Administrator of CMA, made an address. Dr. Qin Dahe, Academician of CAS and President of ISCS, presented certificates to the lecturers. Mr. Hao Yuan, Vice Governor of Gansu Province, Dr. Zhou Xuhong, President of Lanzhou University, attended the opening ceremony and made addresses. Dr. Luo Yong, Deputy Director-General of BCC, presided the closing ceremony and presented diplomas and certificates to the students.
The Following international climatologists and experts on related fields are invited as teachers and lecturers: Dr. Francis Zwiers, Director of Climate Research Division. Dr. Mohan Munasinghe, Vice Chair of IPCC. Dr. Martin Manning, Director of the Working Group I Support Unit for the IPCC and one of the coordinators of the recent IPCC assessment of the science of climate change. Dr. Penny Whetton, Leader of Climate Impact and Risk Stream, CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, Australia. Dr. Sungmin Hong, Director and Principal Research Scientist of Center of Climate Sciences, Korea Polar Research Institute, Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute.
The topics for this year’s ISCS include: global carbon cycle, the role of cryosphere in climate system and climate change, regional climate modeling, climate detection and climate extreme and the relations between climate and the sustainable development. Those topics are the highlights in current research on climate system and climate change. More and more young scientists from other countries, especially those from developing countries will improve their knowledge on climate system and climate change from this seminar.
