World Food Day (16 October) this year focused on climate change and bioenergy. Many developing countries, especially in Africa, are prone to droughts, storms and floods. By learning how to use climate information, small-scale farmers can improve and protect their yields and livelihoods.
The National Meteorological Services of WMO Members provide agrometeorological advisories that are used by farmers to increase crop and livestock yields. This includes plans for planting and harvesting and the reduction of pests and diseases, as well as the impacts of extreme weather and climate events.
These issues will be among those addressed during World Climate Conference-3 on the theme “Climate prediction and information for decision-making” (Geneva, 31 August-4 September 2009).
