The 2008 hurricane season was one of the most active in history. Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, Ike and Paloma had severe impacts on the Caribbean, Central America and North America, including widespread destruction and a huge number of casualties.
Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti and Honduras were among the most affected countries. A record three major hurricanes struck Cuba (Gustav, Ike and Paloma).
The season produced a record number of consecutive storms (six) to strike the USA and ranks as one of the more active seasons in the 64 years since comprehensive records began.
A total of 16 named storms included eight hurricanes, five of which were major hurricanes at Category 3 strength or higher. It was also the first Atlantic season to have a major hurricane form in five consecutive months (Bertha, Gustav, Ike, Omar and Paloma, from July to November).
