February 12, 2009, the Academic Annual Meeting 2008 of NCC Laboratory for Climate Studies was held in Beijing. Dr. Luo Yong (Deputy Director of NCC) presided the opening ceremony. Dr. Chao Qingchen (Deputy Director-General of Department of Scientific and Technological Development), Dr. Pei Hao (Deputy Director-General of Department of Forecasting Services and Disaster Mitigation) and Dr. Li Weijing (Deputy Director of NCC) attended the opening ceremony and made a speech.
This year its theme was "User-oriented climate monitoring and prediction", Academician Ding Yihui (Chinese Academy of Engineering), Professor Wang Shaowu (Institute of Physics, Peking University), Prof. Lin Erda (Institute of Agricultural Environment and Sustainable Development, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences), Prof. Sun Zhaobo (Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology) and Prof. Xia Jun (Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences) were invited to the meeting, and made speech. The theme highlights NCC’s focus "To improve prediction accuracy and enhance the service" in 2008, Dr. Li Weijing (Deputy Director of NCC) and Dr. Luo Yong (Deputy Director of NCC) said that NCC will continue to improve prediction accuracy and public service capacity in this year and future.
The annual meeting lasted for two days, about 160 experts and scholars of more than 40 meteorological services units from different provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities participated the meeting. They exchanged opinion on the climate monitoring, climate variability diagnosis and mechanism studies, extreme climate events and their causes analysis, climate numerical simulation and prediction methods research, climate change detection and climate resource assessment. Meanwhile, they carried out discussions on the climate characteristics and mechanism of the current drought in Northern China.
