Outlook for farmers in West Africa

        2009-05-21

The Permanent Inter-State Committee on Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) warns that there rainfall may be deficient this year, with July-August-September being “normal to dry” in central and western parts.

The situation for agriculture and for food security will depend on the temporal distribution of rain, which is inherently uncertain. There will be a risk of flooding if heavy rain occurs after a long dry period.

The Climate Outlook Forum for West Africa took place in Niamey, Niger, 21-22 May 2009.
