At 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 5 China Meteorological Administration (CMA) convened an intensive consultation meeting on forecasting of tropical storm Goni and Morakot. The Central Meteorological Office (CMO), National Satellite Meteorological Center, and provincial meteorological departments of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Shanghai, Fujian, and Zhejiang participated in the consultation. Jiao Meiyan, Deputy Administrator of CMA was presented at the meeting.
It is reported that the 8th tropical storm Morakot has intensified into a typhoon. At 3:00 p.m. it was centered about 1070 km to east by south of Keelung, Taiwan (23.0N, 132.1E) with maximum wind force up to scale 12 (33m/s). Its intensity is predicted to intensify.
At 3:00 p.m. the 7th tropical storm Goni was centered in Taishan, Guangdong province (22.0N, 112.4E) with maximum wind force up to scale 8 (20m/s).
It is reported that CMA has started up Level Three emergency response and strengthened monitoring to cope with the tropical storms. Three times special consultation meetings are expected to held today.
