Sponsored by the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) and the World Meteorological Organization Climate Information and Prediction Services (WMO CLIPS) office, the IRI-WMO Workshop on Tailoring of Seasonal Forecasts opened on 19 October 2009. Dr. Simon Mason and Andrew Robertson of IRI, and Jean-Pierre Céron of WMO and 18 participants from both academic and operational institutions all over the world attend the workshop.
Dr. Xiao Ziniu, Director-General of BCC, made a speech during the opening ceremony. Nine participants from BCC attended the workshop, one as full participant, the others as observers.
It is recognized that the workshop is crucial for each of the Regional Associations to establish experts in the production of tailored seasonal forecasts for specific user communities, such as public health, water resources, and agriculture. The workshop will assist National Meteorological Services around the world to enhance their capacities to provide high quality, tailored seasonal forecast information in user-friendly formats.
The workshop will last two weeks from 19 to 30 October 2009.
