Department Introduction

Division of Climate Change (DCC) is mainly engaged in scientific researches and operational services related to detection and attribution of climate change, projection of future climate change, assessment of climate capacity, policy-making support for addressing climate change, compilation of China Blue Book on Climate Change and Green Book of Climate Change, and technical support for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) related work in China as well as programs of the China National Climate Change Expert Committee.

Operations and Techniques

Operations and Research Orientations of DCC:
Detection and Attribution of Climate Change: The research team has developed advanced climate change detection and attribution methodologies applicable to China and Asia; pushed forward the detection and attribution of average temperature changes in the region as well as extreme temperature changes and major extreme climate events in China; and published related research findings in top-tier journals such as Nature Climate Change, BAMS, and GRL.
Projection of Future Climate Change: The projection group is dedicated to projection of future extreme climate events in China, projection of climate change in Asia against the 1.5-4℃ global warming threshold, projection of future extreme events in the countries and regions of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), uncertainties in the high-resolution projection of temperature and precipitation, projection of future flood disaster risks in China, impact of climate change on future pollution potentials in China, and technical support for provincial climate change projection, etc.
Climate Change Impact and Adaptation: The special work group focuses on impact of climate change on water resource security, assessment of climate carrying capacity of typical ecosystems and vulnerable areas, climate adaptability and climate risks in key regions, climate change and human health, participation in the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP), etc.
Policy-Making Support for Addressing Climate Change & Scientific Communication: To meet the evolving requirements of decision-makers and public service sector for the science of addressing climate change and for ecological civilization construction, DCC provides targeted decision-making advisory services to multi-level governments and sectors, scientific and technical support for IPCC & UNFCCC activities in China and for programs of the China National Climate Change Expert Committee.
